We know Angel Locsin as an actress, model, and humanitarian who played the roles of Alwina, one of the main characters in the hit GMA TV series Mulawin (2004), and Darna, the fictional Filipino superheroine, created by Mars Ravelo and Nestor Redondo in 1950.
Ever since she started her career in show business Angel has played various roles and has appeared in countless movies, showcasing her versatility as an actress. She can make you cry one minute, and crack you up the next. Because of this, she has remained one of the most sought-after stars in the Philippines.
But did you know that the award-winning actress was once a backup dancer for ’90s superstar Jolina Magdangal?
In an interview on Magandang Buhay, an ABS-CBN morning talk show that airs Mondays to Fridays at 8 a.m., Angel reveals how she was discovered by a talent scout while at a shopping center with her friend.
She said her father had asked her to run some errands, and since she was only 14, she asked her friend to accompany her.
While at the shopping center, she noticed a man, who was in a queue for the lotto tickets, staring at her. She found him so creepy, that she ran away from him. The plastic bag she was carrying gave up, and she had no choice but to stop and pick up the groceries she had just bought. The man caught up with her and introduced himself as a talent scout, and asked her if she wanted to be a model. She said, “Okay.”
Angel went on to recount the story of how she auditioned for Star Circle Batch 9C, the talent center for Star Magic, training and management subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corporation. Star Magic was and still is known for producing world class and highly bankable stars.
Unfortunately, Angel’s father opposed the idea of her signing a contract with them. But before she started her career with GMA, she was chosen to be one of the backup dancers for Jolina Magdangal’s music video.
Jolina happens to be one of the hosts of Magandang Buhay. The singer/host/actress blushed as Angel gushed about being selected to be a backup dancer. She said, “Ate Jolens, meron ako ‘yung MTV mo. Isa ako sa mga gumaganon (snaps her fingers). Tatlo kaming girls. Tapos ang bait-bait mo. Ang bait-bait mo, Ate Jolina tapos hindi mo kami kilala.”
(Ate Jolens, I was one of the backup dancers in your MTV. We were three girls. You were so nice. Just really nice to us. And you didn’t know us.)
It seems like Jolina’s kindness rubbed off on Angel, because many years ago, when she was already a TV superstar, a friend of mine became a roommate of hers during trip to Boracay. It was a sponsored event and my friend was assigned to be her roommate. My friend said Angel was the most down-to-earth girl she’d ever met.
Perhaps it is true what they say, kindness begets kindness.
