Anyone who’s ever set foot in an Ikea store is familiar with the big blue shopping bag that you hang on the shopping cart. It’s huge, shapeless, and not really something you’d think would inspire a French Fashion house to create one of its “must-have” tote bags.
But, alas, Balenciaga has transformed the iconic Ikea shopping bag into, well, a really big blue bag that looks identical to it…except for the price tag.
How much is it, did you ask? Only $2,145! It is called the Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag, and there’s no denying that it’s almost identical to Ikea’s $0.99 shopping bag.
The Balenciaga version is made of glazed leather, while the Ikea original is made of recyclable plastic.
This is not the first time that Balenciaga rocked the fashion boat with an extremely expensive shopping tote inspired by a much cheaper bag.
In 2016, Balenciaga launched the Bazar Shopper totes which greatly resemble the “biyahera” bags or market/laundry bag. Perhaps they were inspired to create another controversial bag because of the success of the Bazar Shopper, which was hailed by Net-A-Porter as THE bag of the moment back in August 2016.
“We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!” a spokesperson for Ikea told Today.
