Traveling is one of the most rewarding, most worthwhile leisurely activities there is. When we travel, we not only get to explore and meet different kinds of people, we also experience things that enrich us and and be a part of a different culture even for a short time.
Being a stranger in a foreign land has its ups and downs. While it is liberating to be away from the stresses of everyday life, when we travel to a different country, most everyone else is a stranger. Most of the time the only people we know are our traveling companions. So we would do well to never let our guard down. Like what happened to a group of tourists who were in Boracay, a party island in the Philippines, during the biggest beach party of the year.
Concerned netizen Jean Cezar Retulin uploaded some photos on Facebook of three foreign tourists who were robbed during “Laboracay,” the biggest party event on the island. It is held every year during Labor Day weekend, and attracts thousands of foreign and local tourists alike.
Ms. Retulin says in a Facebook post:
Nanakawan po Sila nang IPhone, pera at cards. Iniwan kasi Nila na walang bantay habang naliligo sa beach 🌊🌊🏊🏽
Nakita Ko Sila na imiiyak di alam yung gagawin habang pinag titinginan Lang ng mga dumadaan. So ako nalang lumapit at nag tanong. Check out pa naman Sila bukas 😞
Indi gd mag aywan it gamit Kung ga paligos Ay Abong manakaw makara
(They were robbed of their iPhone, money and cards. They left their stuff at the beach while they went for a swim.
I saw them crying. They didn’t know what to do, while people were just passing them by. So I approached them and asked. I found out they’re supposed to check out tomorrow.
We couldn’t find a tricycle. They were all busy. Thanks to C2 for the free ride.
I brought them to the police station. I found out they weren’t the only ones robbed. There were others also foreigners.
You’re not supposed to leave your things unattended otherwise they will be stolen.)
We should always be alert when we’re traveling. Things like this can be avoided if we are careful. Also, always keep a photocopy of your passport and other important documents in the hotel’s safety deposit box. If your hotel doesn’t have one, leave it inside your suitcase and lock it.
Also, if there’s no need to bring all of your cash and credit cards with you, just leave them in your hotel room, again inside the safety deposit box or a locked suitcase.
We hope this story serves as a reminder for all of us to always be extra careful especially when we travel.
